On 3rd August 2007, as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Lovell radio telescope, Jodrell Bank Observatory hosts a unique event by Ansuman Biswas, who took part in iShed's Diffraction Placement at HP Labs Bangalore, and Jem Finer.

A specially commissioned musical composition featuring the telescope itself as a huge musical instrument, the piece is a remarkable collaboration between the two artists and musicians and radio astronomers at the University of Manchester's world-famous observatory.

Biswas and Finer have been working together since 2000 on a number of projects including magic flying carpets, zero gravity films and installations, and underwater sculptures and performances.

Publicly Funded Culture and the Creative Industries
, a new research paper by John Holden of Demos, calls for new understandings of how culture can benefit the creative industries, stating that the creative industries are poorly understood in policy, partly because they often do not conform to traditional expectations about how businesses work, and partly because their scale makes them hard to measure and hard to engage with.

Breaking down the ways in which public funding of culture feeds through into economic activity in the creative industries, the paper cites Watershed as 'an exciting example of an organisation successfully nurturing innovation in the creative industries. It is the home for creative networking in Bristol, and is funded by, among others, Arts Council England and South West Screen'.
