MeiGeist - best ARG of 2007
January 24, 2008
Posted by Clare in: Events | TrackbackMeiGeist Alternate Reality Game, which came out of the Watershed/HP Labs artist placement scheme last year, was named as the most outstanding ARG of 2007 by players and critics. It triumphed ahead of World Without Oil, The Lost Experience and Year Zero, huge Alternate Reality Games with million dollar budgets. US-based ARG producers commented “MeiGeist was pretty amazing” (Marie Lamb of World Without Oil), “MeiGeist came out of nowhere. It was so well done, definitely a nice surprise for the year.” (Brooke Thompson). Congratulations Hazel and Jon of Licorice Film, who created it. Quick clarification: "World Without Oil" did not have a million-dollar budget! More like $100K. It was a serious game for the public good, not a big-money commercial endeavor. Other stats available via Christy Dena: http://www.christydena.com/online-essays/arg-stats/
We at ARGNet are pleased you enjoyed the netcast! However, to clarify, at no point in the ARG Netcast that is being linked to here, did I or any of the other netcasters refer to MeiGeist as THE best game of 2007. Our 'best of' list was never ranked, and it is disingenuous to try to do so for any reason. Because of the transitory nature of alternate reality games, it is nearly impossible to determine a 'best of' for any given time period.
While I agree that MeiGeist was awesome, it was one awesome ARG out of a year full of shining examples of good ARGs, including the fabulous Year Zero and the other ARGs that earned our praises last year. We look forward to what 2008 has in store for the genre.
Sorry, I guess we got a bit carried away… Should have read one of the best ARGs of the year!
