iShed receives TSB grant to work with ANTIVJ

Posted by Clare in: Events | Add a commentiShed received confirmation of funding this week for a new project: From 2009, Dreamworks will offering all of its films in stereoscopic 3D and many other studios are following suit, but despite an exponential growth in computing power and 3D animation capabilities, there is no affordable system which enables the production and projection of
content for smaller 3D display (rather than cinema or IMAX).
The project has been funded through a Technology Strategy Board Feasibility Grant to develop affordable prototype tools to enable objects created in 3D software to be displayed on non-flat surfaces. Visually, this could be compared to projecting a hologram. From gaming to live performance, the potential applications are significant and include architecture/town planning (3D visualization of a new developments); museums (3D visualization of content); education (visualization of 3D simulations in Biology/Chemistry); Medicine (3D simulations of body/operations) and advertising (3D floating billboards).
iShed will work with projection experts AntiVJ, whose 3D mapping technology is already in use in exhibitions and installations across Europe, to explore how to merge existing tools used for stereoscopy, motion/object tracking and real-time 3D. Anti-VJ are already familiar with these individual areas and the main area of technological research will be how to combine them in a scaleable system to create unified, affordable 3D displays which can be viewed from any angle and which can be moved around (with the projection remaining tied to the object). The type of system produced could be used by any sector working with 3D objects/content and, as it would work with real-time content generation, could be used by sectors who need to modify their content whilst visualizing it. iShed will exploit the knowledge created through this study for its work with these partners and will engage in knowledge exchange activities within its extensive network of creative industries. Anti-VJ will use the system produced in its work across Europe in events, festivals and for corporate clients.
iShed leads SXSW Interactive delegations

Posted by Clare in: Events 5| CommentsiShed Directer Clare Reddington will be leading a party of 20 to the SXSW Interactive Festival (13 – 17 March 2009) which takes place in Austin, Texas and celebrates the creativity and passion behind the coolest new media technologies. Panel sessions cover everything from web design to bootstrapping to social networks, and industry giants like Google host the parties.
iShed is managing two delegations, one funded by South West Screen, comprising of HMC Interactive, Mobile Pie, Sift and Simon Games, and another funded by Arts Council England comprising of Alex Fleetwood of Hide and seek, Dan Efergan of Aardman, Sarah Ellis of Apples & Snakes, Andrew Wilson of Blink Media, Lisa Meyer and Jennie Moore of Capsule, Jess Tyrell of Germination, Steve Manthorp, Nina Steiger of Soho Theatre, Simon Poulter Simon Evans of Simon Games and Duncan Speakman.
Also going along are Mike Bennett of Bristol Media, Hazel Grian, Andy Parkhouse of Team Rubber and members of the Bristol Music Foundation.
